From the next academic session 2013–14, the total number of MBBS seats in the new AIIMS would go up to 600, providing an opportunity to an additional 300 MBBS aspirants. With these new additions, the overall availability of MBBS seats in India would rise to 42,169 in the next academic year from the existing 41,569 in 335 medical colleges and 300 in AIIMS-like institutes across the country. The health ministry is striving to achieve the target doctor-patient ratio of 1:1000 by 2021, which at present is 1:2000. The government plans to increase overall availability of MBBS seats to 80,000 from the present 41,569 and of PG seats to 45,000 from the current 22,194 by 2021. The aim is to reduce the shortage of doctors, which is currently pegged at around 800,000 (800,000). India has 27 regional cancer centres. 400 RT machines are available for cancer treatment.

AFMC :

The Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) is a medical college in India. It is located in Pune Cantonment in Pune in the state of Maharashtra. The college is managed by the Indian Armed Forces. The Armed Forces Medical College has multiple roles to perform. These are primarily training of medical undergraduates and post-graduates, dental postgraduates, nursing cadets and paramedical staff. Patient care forms an integral part of its training curriculum and the attached hospitals benefits from the expertise available at AFMC. The institution is responsible for providing the entire pool of specialists and super specialists to the Armed Forces. The college is also involved in conducting research in various medical subjects as well as those aspects which would affect the morale and performance of the Armed Forces, both in war and peace.

Admission :

Admission to MBBS course are on the basis of an objective type written examination conducted in 28 centres across India. This is followed by an interview and then after the final selection, 130 students are admitted to the College. of these,at least 25 are girls. All these students are liable to serve in the medical services of the Armed Forces on successful completion of MBBS for at least seven years.

The college conducts Under Graduate course sanctioned vide Govt. of India Ministry of Defence letter no. 11984/DGAFMS/DG-3(B)/9718/D (Med) dated 04 July 1962

OBC reservation is being implemented under government directives, but only in central institutes (i.e. not in most of the colleges covered under AIPMT). About 1900 MBBS and approximately 250 dental seats are available through AIPMT, but ranks up to 2500 can reasonably hope for selection due to overlap with other entrances.

Course Duration:

The duration of MBBS course is four and a half year followed by internship of one year.

Service Liability:

Students have compulsory liability to serve as Commisioned Officers in the Armed Forces Medical Services. The offer of the type of commission will depend on the vacancies available. The candidates’ parents/guardians are required to sign a bond agreement at the time of admission.

ELIGIBILITY AND QUALIFICATIONS TO APPEAR IN THE ENTRANCE EXAMINATION GENERAL:

A candidate seeking admission to the MBBS course is eligible to take the entrance examination if he/she fulfills the following criteria:

A candidate should be a citizen of India or be a subject of Nepal or Bhutan or a person of Indian origin migrated from Pakistan or any other foreign country with the intention of permanently settling in India. Must be unmarried. Marrying during the course is not permitted. Should be medically fit as per prescribed standards by the Govt. of India, Ministry of Defence Must have attained the age of 17yrs on 31st Dec of the year of application, but must not have attained the age of 22 years on that date(Not more than 24 years in case of candidates who have passed or are appearing in final B Sc examinations).

Academic Qualifications:

Candidate must have passed all the subjects opted for in the first attempt of the qualifying examinations as a regular candidate with English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken simultaneously and securing not less than 60% of the aggregate marks in these 3 science subjects taken together and not less than 50% marks in English and 50% marks in each of the science subjects. They must have also passed an examination in Mathematics of the 10th standard.

Service Liability:

A total of 130 students (105 boys & 25 girls) will be admitted.
